Dr McConnell is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets Hub (ORCA). Within the ORCA Hub, he is part of the team developing and testing the latest technology for monitoring offshore infrastructure, the Limpet platform.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he developed personalised facemasks for clinicians as part of the CSO funded 3DPPE project.

Before joining the Soft Systems Group, he was awarded an EPSRC DTA Scholarship to undertake his PhD in Rehabilitation Robotics at Heriot-Watt University. He holds an MEng (Hons) in Robotics and Cybertronics and an MSc (Disc) in Robotics, Autonomous and Interactive Systems with a specialism in Evolutionary and Bioinspired Robotics.

His research interests include soft robotics, multi-sensor systems, prosthetics, wearable technology and human-robot interaction.

He has led multiple STEM public engagement projects such as the ‘Robots in the Danger Zone’ at the Royal Society Summer of Science Exhibition 2019 and ‘Robosense: Sensing Your Environment with Robots’ a RAEng Ingenious award.
