I recently travelled to Pheonix Arizona to organise a symposium at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting. Together with Professor Stephen Morin, Professor Robert Shepherd, and Professor Ozge Akbulut we ran a hugely successful symposium entitled “Soft Materials, Sensors, Electronics, Displays and Actuators—Functional Components for Soft Machines and Robots“.

Our opening speaker was our former postdoctoral advisor—Professor George Whitesides—who delivered a fantastic overview of the field alongside recent developments and future directions. Throughout the week we were treated to some spectacular talks from world-leading scientists and we kept a packed room throughout. Three posters from our symposium won Best Poster Awards, thus demonstrating the high scientific quality of our attendees.

The crowning achievement of the week went to Haverford Robotics. This team of high-school students entered a poster on edible robotics and came away with The Best Poster Award from the conference – a huge achievement.
