The scientific journal club at the Institute for Integrated Micro & Nano Systems at the University of Edinburgh is a student-organised, casual discussion group. We meet fortnightly during semester time to discuss current scientific news and have covered a wide range of topics. In the light of the Karolinska institute scandal we discussed articles on regenerative medicine. When the detection of gravitational waves hit the news we imagined the possibilities opened by this new observational technique. We have also looked at research at the University of Edinburgh. We discussed the Li-Fi research by Prof Haas and colleagues, the research by Prof Mount’s group on molten salts, and had a lively discussion about missions and challenges related to the work of the UK Centre for Astrobiology. Our meetings are fuelled by cake, doughnuts and coffee and are a great opportunity to get together with other PhD students and research assistants. If you would like to know more about the Journal Club come along to our next meeting or contact j.dodoo@ed.ac.uk. An archive of journal club meetings from 2016-17 can be found here: http://imnsjournalclub.blogspot.co.uk/

The next scientific journal club takes place on 29th March, 12:30-13:30 in the SMC room 1.03. We will be discussing the life and work of Stephen Hawking, starting with his 1975 paper on Particle Creation by Black Holes. We will also have a look at ‘Mind over matter’: Stephen Hawking – obituary by Roger Penrose: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/mar/14/stephen-hawking-obituary
